Sudbury, ON

Oh boy, what a day. Started out okay. I drove pretty much straight from Dryden to Thunder Bay, then on to Wawa. I stopped for some supper, then noticed a problem with the route I had planned yesterday using Google Maps: it wasn’t showing up on my GPS receiver. I assumed my map was too old or something and decided to follow that route anyways since it was like 100 km shorter than going through Sault Ste. Marie. Well it turns out that the reason the GPS wouldn’t show that route because it defaults to routing without using unpaved roads, something that Google Maps sure doesn’t do and doesn’t warn you. So it was getting close to sunset when I came upon the 75 km gravel log camp road… The only thing I can describe it as is a pitch-black rally race in a stock Corolla, with cars coming the other direction. The road was hard-packed and smooth in most places, but with a layer of gravel on top that made me slide through every corner. At any rate, it was the singular worst driving experience I’ve ever had. So I ended up at the hotel about 4 hours later than I expected: about midnight local time. The room is comfy, but the internet is awful and the TV reception. I only have about 600 km to drive tomorrow so I’m sleeping in until 8:30ish I think. After tonight’s 2 or 3 hours of night driving, the 401 shouldn’t be too much trouble tomorrow.
